FEATURED PUBLICATION: Parenting Publications

BREAK INTO YOUR LOCAL MARKET BY WRITING FOR PARENTS

Writing for an audience of parents can prove an excellent entrée into your local market. If you have young children — or grandchildren — or if, quite simply, you’re interested in writing about interesting diversions on offer for kids in your area, consider one of the publications listed at http://www.parentmedia.org/.

You’ll find a full list of links to parenting publications in cities across America, Canada, and Australia here.

The list includes, for example: Atlanta Parent, Austin Family, Melbourne’s Child, Tulsa Kids… and 93 others.

While each individual publication negotiates assignments and fees and such with writers directly, the Parenting Publications website offers some insightful guidance about the most effective ways to approach articles, including this note:

“Geography is important to PPA editors in more than one way. Whether you want to pitch an original idea or sell reprint rights to an already written piece, you will meet with more success if you offer to localize the piece for every publication that publishes it. For example, offer to add quotes from local experts or parents, or include a sidebar with local resources. The editor may be able to suggest contacts.”

Article length at these publications varies from short articles at 400-500 words to long features at 1400-1800 words.  While some publications pay by word, most pay standard rates per article — $25 to $45 for reprints and $50 to $300 for original articles.
