FEATURED PUBLICATION: The Cultured Traveler
HOPING TO RESELL THAT TRAVEL STORY? DO IT HERE…
By Roberta Beach Jacobson in Karpathos, Greece
The Cultural Travels website hosts an extensive database of specialty tour operators and also publishes an online travel magazine called The Cultured Traveler.
What makes this magazine unique is the fact that the publisher, Sheri Leigh, encourages you to submit articles that you’ve already sold elsewhere — reprints, in other words. (This is a great way to eke a little more cash out of a story you’ve already sold once — or more than once.)
She accepts reprints of travel articles from freelance travel writers. The articles typically (and preferably) run 1000-1500 words (3000 words is the maximum). Ms. Leigh likes a piece that tells a story, so if you have an article that’s anecdotal, it might be just right for The Cultured Traveler.
The editorial calendar is set around themes like B&Bs, Farmhouse Stays, Archaeological Digs, and Language Classes. You can also suggest a theme if you don’t see one to suit you.
Ms. Leigh is very clear on the technical aspects of your submission, and she gives very specific instructions on the size and type of print to use in the body of your story, the headlines, and the subheads. Study her guidelines carefully to see what fonts she expects throughout the manuscript, etc.
You can query or submit directly at the website. When you contact The Cultured Traveler, it’s important to state upfront that you are a freelance writer. (They take articles from PR folks but don’t pay for those.) Freelance writers, however, receive $25 for each reprint.
Photos — saved in jpeg or bitmap format — are welcome with your articles. You’re instructed to send them when you send your article, attached as separate files. Name your photos so it’s clear they go with your article. (For example: If your article is about Chicago, save your photos as chicago1.jpeg and chicago2.jpeg etc.).
The Cultured Traveler responds to queries or submissions within 15 days and usually publishes within a month of acceptance. You can include a bio of a couple of lines in length and you can also list your website there.
If you’re an ITWPA member, your mygalleryplace.com webpage would be a good page to use to showcase your photos. (To learn more about the benefits of ITWPA membership go here: http://www.itwpa.com)
If your article is accepted for publication in The Cultured Traveler, you can expect to retain ownership and all rights, allowing you to publish it again elsewhere. The editors at The Cultured Traveler ask for the rights to publish your article in any online issue they choose and also to keep it permanently in their online archives with your by-line retained. For full details, review the Writer’s Guidelines.
