An Outlet for an Independent Traveler’s View of France
By Roberta Beach Jacobson in Karpathos, Greece

It’s alleged that if the corks from wine bottled in France during a single year were set end-to-end, they’d go around the world three times. This is the sort of tidbit France for Freebooters editor, Michael Kingdom-Hockings, loves to present to his readers.

While Mike enjoys all things French, in his France for Freebooters ezine, he leans toward offbeat coverage, “those stories not likely to be found by the guidebook tourist.”

The publication covers a wide range of topics — the hi-ways and by-ways of France, waterways that wind their way through the French countryside, parks and museums. And if it’s French food you fancy, you can submit food-related articles and recipes too.

As long as your article is related to France, Mike is interested.

And don’t worry, you don’t have to pick up and move all the way to France to get a by-line in his ezine! My husband Alf hadn’t been to France for years, but he likes France for Freebooters and wanted to submit something. He sent Mike a review of a great book about expatriate life in France — and landed the by-line.

There are no formal guidelines for submissions to this ezine. Mike is open to all article lengths, anything from short anecdotes to full destination features. The choice is yours.

Photos play a role in France for Freebooters. According to the editor, you should aim for “Unusual subject matter. Adequate technical quality (sharp, correctly exposed, good composition)…” He will often crop a photo to enhance it, so even if your framing isn’t 100%, you might find that your photo is accepted on condition of a little editing. Your photos should try to capture the mood of your subject and the atmosphere too. You’ll also need to add a caption to the photos you submit.

Unfortunately, France for Freebooters does not pay for content for the ezine, but it does provide you a place to showcase your articles and show off a by-line.

Mike will be glad to link to your personal website and occasionally he profiles contributors too.

If you’d like to contribute, you can contact Mike at: michael.kingdomhockings@gmail.com.

And if you really have nothing to contribute on France… contact Mike anyway! He’s launching a new website called Don’t Stop the World – I’m Enjoying the Ride. And this new website covers everything EXCEPT France. You can find more details at http://www.dontstoptheworld.com
