FEATURED PUBLICATION: Soul of America
An African American Travel Portal: Outlet for Cultural Travel Tales
By Roberta Beach Jacobson in Karpathos, Greece
The Soul of America (SoA) website was launched in 1997. Today, a decade later, it garners more than four million page views per year. The website bills itself as “making soulful travel easy.”
Editor Jeanette Valentine said African American online travelers were an underrepresented market until the launch of SoA. This travel portal is open to anyone, and although the website focuses on content for black travelers, it’s available for all to enjoy.
There’s a ton of stunning travel material to paw through, and they make it easy to navigate and fun to browse with 18 channels (such as beaches, resorts, family travel, singles travel, romantic travel, etc.).
The focus of this site is cultural travel in America and the Caribbean, but there is a smattering of content that covers other locations too. I spotted an article about Venice, for instance. Each guide covers the usual ground — where to stay and what to do — but in addition you get information on cultural sites, historic sites, and art and history museums. Some of these guides have additional editorial content too. In fact, while you’re browsing this site, be sure to catch a few of the slide shows — they will leave you breathless.
[Ed. Note: At this time Soul of America’s website states they are fully staffed and does not offer any information for freelancers]
If you’re interested in writing for this portal, your travel story can run the gamut… from a memorable shopping trip to a wonderful dining experience to an interesting international destination.
