Featured Publication: Eating Well Magazine
Eating Well Magazine, in print and online, is all about helping readers fill their lives with food that’s both delicious and healthy. Though the magazine explores healthy eating with a no-frills, journalistic approach, the articles are light and approachable.
The magazine welcomes articles from freelance writers, and suggests, as does our very own Jennifer Stevens, author of the Ultimate Travel Writer Program, that to break in, you should start by pitching a smaller, front-of-the-book piece. In the Writer’s Guidelines, you’ll find a quick run-down of the magazine sections and what, specifically, the editors are looking for in each.
NOTE: The Food and Travel section is often written by established writers who can show clips of their previously published work. If you’ve never been published before but you have a piece that you think will fit in this section, you might consider sending something else in first; perhaps a smaller, front-of-the-book piece for another section of the magazine. Here are two front-of-the-book sections to try if you’re just starting out…
Articles in these sections are typically 250 to 500 words long.
** Local Hero: Here’s where your travel writing interview skills will come in handy. This section is a profile of a person who promotes positive food issues, including “sustainable agriculture, food justice, nutrition education, food safety, environmental consciousness, animal welfare (as it relates to food) and/or healthful eating practices in his or her (or their) local community.”
The Writer’s Guidelines warmly invite new writers to have a go at this section… even if you have no previous writing experience.
** Nutrition—News to Live By: Articles in this section are largely image-driven, so the editors ask that you offer art suggestions (photos, graphics, etc.) along with your pitch. If you’re interested in contributing to the Nutrition section, a background in science and/or health is helpful.
To submit an article query to the Local Hero or Nutrition sections, contact associate editor of nutrition, Brierley Wright, at brierley@eatingwell.com, and include “Local Hero” or “Nutrition” in your subject line.
Payment depends on the article but can be up to $1 per word.
You’ll find more sections in the Writer’s Guidelines, here.
