Equinox Egg Legend: Truth or Myth?

Today, summer turns to fall, and some pretty strange things can happen…
See, it’s the autumnal equinox. Day and night are of equal length. And legend has it that at the precise moment when the sun lines up with the equator, you can balance and egg on its end. This year, it’s at 4:18 p.m., Eastern Time.
It’s true… it worked for me:

Equinox Egg

You can balance eggs on the equator, too. We tried it last month during our Ecuador Photography and Travel Writing Expedition:
Well, I didn’t want to tell you this at first, for fear of taking away the magic of it all…
But I took that photo last week. On a normal day. And I was no where near the equator.
Lo and behold, you can balance an egg anywhere, any time. You just have to find the right egg and be patient. Try it again next month — you’ll see!
So… balancing an egg on the equator isn’t anything special. But it’s still a fun party trick.
And, really, that’s not what the magic of Ecuador is all about.
Sure, you can balance an egg anywhere. But where else can you take photos of people getting spiritually cleansed by fire-breathing shamans… dine in a restaurant where jewel-colored peacocks roam the grounds and your appetizer comes in a tinkling wooden music box… sit down for lunch with the native Kichwa people and watch as they make shoes out of cactus fibers… watch a man carve an instrument out of bamboo and then put it up to his lips and play…
Nowhere but Cotacachi, Ecuador.
I’m itching to tell you more but I don’t want to give it all away! Part of the magic is in the discovery, after all. Lori was too pregnant to go last month, so she sent my coworker Jackie and I in her place — and let me tell you, we were loving our jobs.
We’re going back to Cotacachi this February for a week filled with music, crafts, smiling locals, delicious healthy food, culture, Spanish, and lots and lots of incredible photography.
Plus, we’ll fill our suitcases with crafts from the largest indigenous market in South America. And we’ll go to one of the continent’s most luxurious five-star hotels for a very special spa treatment… and a dinner that I promise you will never forget. (I’m still lusting after that chocolate cake.)
Happy fall!
