Day 1: On the Ground in Bali

Kopi luwak coffee is said to be the most expensive coffee in the world and it’s harvested right here in Bali.
Unlike most coffee beans, kopi luwak beans are first ingested by a luwak (a weasel-like animal) and then passed through their digestive tract and excreted as waste.  Local Balinesians then gather the droppings, wash them, and dry them before roasting and finally grinding to drink.
Did we try some?
Of course we did.  What kind of travelers would we be if we didn’t?
And it was nice.  Smooth, as they say.  Not bitter.
But is it worth $100 per pound?  I decided it wasn’t.
Tomorrow we’re taking a Balinese cooking class that starts with a tour of the market where I hear $100 will buy a full two week’s worth of clothes.
