Visiting Cemeteries for Travel Articles, Strange Travel Tip #8

Halloween isn’t the only time to tour local cemeteries.

As part of our Strange and Bizarre Travel Tip Series, I’d like to encourage you from now on to visit cemeteries every time you travel.  It’s a great way to examine local culture, religion, art, and history.  And you’ll find that some are more like parks than places to be scared of.

They make for good photographs, too.  Great fine art prints.  And if there’s a story behind the gravestones, great editorial shots, too.

Check out these strange and unusual cemeteries around the world…

1.    The Neptune Memorial Reef (also known as the Atlantis Memorial Reef or the Atlantis Reef) is an underwater graveyard that just opened in 2007, off the coast of Miami Beach, FL.  It’s a classical re-creation of the Lost City, 40 feet under the sea.

2.    Cimetiere Des Chiens a pet cemetery just outside the suburbs of Paris, France. It was opened in 1899 in response to a new French law that prohibited families from disposing of their pets in the trash or in the Seine. The most famous headstone belongs to Rin Tin Tin, the legendary American dog that starred in various Hollywood movies.

3.    Cross Bones Graveyard in South London, traditionally called the Single Women’s Graveyard, dates back to medieval times and was the final resting place for prostitutes. You’ll find the fence around the graveyard decorated with multicolor ribbons and silk stockings.

4.    Le Mummie di Urbania in Italy. This Cemetery of the Mummies was built in 1833 and is famous for its mold – the mold absorbs moisture from corpses and mummifies them completely.  The bodies themselves, without caskets or burial are on display.

5.    The Shirokorechenskoe Cemetery in Yekaterinburg, Russia is home to some of the biggest  criminals and mobsters in Russia. Inside, you’ll find very expensive tombs with precious stones and engravings like: He was an expert in using knifes.
