In Rome: Buried alive and fed by wolves
History buff, Mindy C. wants to go to Rome to take saleable photographs of archaeological wonders like the Roman Forum with its headless Vestal Virgin statues.
The Vestals were a group of female priests who tended the sacred fire of Vesta. While they were held in high regard (ie, they could own property, make a will and vote), it wasn’t all fun being a Vestal Virgin.
If the fire went out, the Goddess Vesta would remove her protection from the City of Rome, and the Vestals could be flogged with metal-or bone-tipped whips.
It was also a commitment of 30 long, celibate years with a no-tolerance policy on hanky-panky. (Note: If a Vestal lost her virginity, willingly or against her will, she was buried alive in an unmarked grave!!)
Mindy wants to photograph these virgins and have them live eternally in a photo above her fireplace.
George H., another reader on my Rome list, says he has had a fascination with the Eternal City since he was a child. He loved the stories of Remus and Romulus most.
In Rome, he wants to watch for appearances of the she-wolf who appears all over the City in sculptures and paintings suckling her twins.
Legend has it that Romulus and Remus were twin brothers born to Vestal Virgin Rhea Silva and Mars, the Roman God of War. Because Rhea broke her vows, she was put to death and her twin sons were to be drowned in the Tiber River. But instead, the river carried them to safety. A she-wolf found and suckled them. And a woodpecker fed them. Eventually, a shepherd and his wife found and fostered them to adulthood.
The Eternal City is exploding with legends, magnificent artwork, historical buildings and landmarks, quaint cobblestone alleyways, open marketplaces and intimate restaurants… all photographic gems in the making.
