What is Your Stock Photography Style? Take This Quiz to Find Out…
One of the great things about working at AWAI is that you’re surrounded by entrepreneurs and wanna-be entrepreneurs all the time.
Over 10 years ago, when I was based at the Florida office of AWAI, I worked with a girl named Lisa Bruette. One day, Lisa came up with a business idea that I still think about today. She wanted to develop a database of celebrities and catalogue their face shape, body type, height, weight, skin tone, etc. And then create a service for people that paired each customer with their celebrity model.
I, for instance, might be paired with Jennifer Aniston in face shape and body type so if I ever want to cut my hair, I can look at pictures of Jennifer Aniston and see what her well-paid stylists are doing with her hair. And, when I’m shopping for clothes, I can first look at what she’s wearing in all the tabloids, and if I like an outfit, can assume something similar might look nice on me.
I love this idea and think of it often. When I’m in doubt of clothes to buy, makeup to wear or have a hair-cut pending, it’d be nice if I could just turn to my celebrity model and follow the path their stylist paved for them.
So today, I’d like to offer the same service to you with your photography. Answer the following questions for yourself:
1) I am most comfortable working with…
a. Models that I’ve hired to play a character.
b. Friends that I’ve asked to pose for me.
c. Myself – I like being my own model.
d. Nature or still-lifes – I don’t shoot people often.
2) The most common place I photograph in is…
a. The studio that I’ve created in my home.
b. Outside in an urban setting.
c. On a white table-top where I can shoot stills.
d. I’m more outdoorsy. I’d rather photograph on hiking trails or in the woods.
3) I would like photography to be…
a. My full-time job.
b. A happier second career.
c. A fun hobby.
d. A bonus to accompany the career I love.
4) My current photography skill level is…
a. Beginner
b. Intermediate
c. Advanced
Tomorrow, based on your answers, I’ll help you figure out which “celebrity” photographer would be your best match. This will be the photographer whose career you might watch the closest and whose portfolio you might strive to emulate when you’re creating your own.
Stay tuned.
