Travel Blogging: Head for the Intersection

Have you ever wanted to write a blog, but you’re not quite sure what to blog about? How will you think of story ideas? How can you come up with good topics? 

More importantly, will people be interested in your topic? Will they read your blog? Will enough people read it that you’ll be able to make money as a blogger?

If you’re interested in blogging, but you’re not sure where to start, I’d like to offer a little tip that’s helped me tremendously: Try blogging at the “intersection” between two topics.

Isn’t One Topic Enough?

Have you ever had someone ask you: “Tell me a story?” Did you freeze? That’s too broad of a question. You don’t know where to begin.

But if that same person had said, “Tell me a story about your favorite birthday party” or “Tell me a story about your worst haircut,” you’d be able to launch into a story with more ease. By narrowing the topic, you can come up with more story ideas.

Let’s Hear an Example

You love to travel. But travel is a huge topic, and when you’re presented with such a broad umbrella, it can be hard to find story ideas. Should you write about how to find cheap airfare? Should you describe the places you visit? Should you write luggage reviews?

You also love food. But food – alone – is a huge topic. A “food blog” might showcase recipes, it might host nutrition debates, it might focus on urban gardening. The topic is too broad.

But what if you wrote a blog at the intersection between travel and food? Rather than wondering about which portion of your day you should describe, you’d know that you should discuss the meals. Rather than pondering which aspects of another country or culture you should focus on, you know that you should talk about the way in which they eat.

The readers who will flock to your blog will be both travel enthusiasts, as well as foodies. You’ll be able to promote your site within both realms.

Not interested in food? That’s fine. You can blog about the intersection between travel and fashion, outdoor adventure, budgeting and money, career, retirement, or language acquisition. You can blog about traveling as a single person, as a couple, as someone in their 50s, as a woman, as a man, as a family.

My own personal blog, for example, covers the topics of travel, money, lifestyle, and career. I write about cultivating the freedom to work anywhere on the planet, as long as you have an Internet connection. I write about cutting back on expenses that don’t matter, so that you can spend lavishly on the experiences you value most. And I write about growing and maintaining wealth to fuel a lifestyle of travel and adventure.

You can’t call me solely a finance blogger, a travel blogger or a career blogger: I write a little bit about all of these topics. As a result, I’ve developed a readership that specifically consists of people interested in these concepts and ideas.
