Holiday Travel Tip #2: A Writing Tool in Your Pocket

Saburo’s Sushi House in Sellwood, Oregon, is known for its colossal portions. Their California rolls are three inches across… and fresh salmon sashimi is a whopping four inches long, per piece. Bonnie, the newest member of our Great Escape Publishing team, wasn’t carrying a ruler last time she ate there. But she did have a dollar bill in her wallet, and made good use of it to measure the food on her table.

Today’s holiday tip is that a dollar bill is exactly six inches long.

The next time you need to measure something in order to write a more specific description in your travel article, get out a dollar bill and smooth the long edge. Think: how thick are the fluffy pillows at your hotel? How many inches long is that fish you just caught? How big are the margaritas in that Mexican restaurant you’d like to review?

If you’ve got a dollar in your wallet, you don’t have to estimate.
